Lohri festival is celebrated by lighting bonfire. The bonfire is considered sacred and is believed to be a symbol of fertility, good luck, and auspiciousness. Therefore, the first Lohri is of great significance to a newly married couple or a newborn.
In the earlier times, people used to collect wood logs and fuel like dried cow dung cakes days before the festival to light up a bonfire.
Til (sesame seeds), Gur (jaggery), Moongphali (peanuts), flattened rice, or popcorn are believed to be auspicious during this festival. Thus, they are offered the bonfire as a gesture to thank God. People pray to God for showering them with a good yield. Some people also offer milk, water, and circumambulate the bonfire to give respect.
