Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) reported on 21,819 new COVID cases on Friday (January 7), the highest single-day increase in the Asian country. The highest-ever tally was recorded on September 16, 2021, at 21,181 cases. The uncertainty amid rising COVID cases sent Philippine stocks index tumbling on Friday even as the peso weakened. Cebu Pacific, the country’s biggest airline, has cancelled more domestic flights from Saturday to Monday (January 8-10). In its latest case bulletin, the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) said it recorded a 40% positivity rate from the 70,049 tests conducted. The new infections raised the country’s COVID numbers to 2.9 million cases — of which 77,369 are active cases. The health department also reported the recovery of 973 patients and the death of 129 others.
